Drakes Island - outside Breakwater

It was nice to get back in the Sea Kayak. I make the distance paddled around 8.5 miles (using a string and map). Although the wind patterns were interesting (there was a bit of wind in the morning, I think it might have moved and we were sheltered in the afternoon) it was enough to make balance “interesting” in places. I can’t remember the forecast probabilities of rain, and whilst it spotted we never did see any. There was negligible swell, just enough to keep the rock hopping interesting. Low tide was 12:50; I figure we were on the breakwater between 11 and 12.

Weather

I did a lot of rock hopping on the outside of the breakwater, between the 100 ton (or tonne) concrete blocks that are in various states of wear. There wasn’t enough swell to make this challenging, but you do need to control your boat well to navigate repeated narrow gaps between blocks.

Bovisand

After a lazy lunch at Bigbury we paddled back to Mount Batten, with some rock hopping around the coast. Again, the low swell meant this wasn’t too challenging, and the normal spacing of rocks provided opportunity to practice turning.
